Flight Planning

A standard ICAO Flight Plan is normally required for all flights operating in or transiting Channel Islands Controlled Airspace.

Training flights operating solely within Channel Islands Airspace which are subject to mandatory “Booking Out” will not normally require the submission of a full ICAO Flight Plan. These include: Jersey Local Training Area, Jersey Round Island Flights, Jersey Circuit traffic

All Flight Plans should be addressed to EGJJZTZX.

In order to simplify the flight planning process, especially the completion of the Route Field, Jersey ATC will accept the use of the abbreviations for the Channel Islands associated Visual Reference Points as detailed on the Standard Routes page of this site.

Inbound Flight Plans should be filed at least 1 hour prior to departure.

Departure Flight Plans MUST be submitted at least 1 hr prior to departure. (2 hours if submitting a plan via FAX to Jersey ATC)

Please Note: If required, CI CTR PPR must be requested at least 1 hour prior to the estimate for the Channel Islands Airspace Boundary.

The submission of a Flight Plan DOES NOT constitute a request for PPR. Any inbound Flight Plan received for a route for which PPR is notified as being require without a valid Channel Islands PPR Booking Reference declared in Field 18 (Other Information) during a notified period of PPR will be rejected.

Visual Reference Points:

In order to simplify the flight planning process Jersey ATC is happy to accept the use of the abbreviations detailed in the table below in the route field of your VFR Flight Plan.

route identifiers must be used.

Recommended Arrival Routes for flight planning purposes

The following table provides examples of the recommended text which may be used in the Route Field of your VFR Flight Plan for the standard inbound routes.

Where no prominent ground features exists, notified IFR Reporting points have been substituted. (Please refer to the UK AIP for details)

Please refer to the appropriate “Destination” page to identify the most appropriate standard inbound route for your flight.

Clearance to enter Channel Islands Airspace on one of these Standard Routes will be accompanied by a level restriction.
This will normally be in the form of an instruction to continue “Not Above” or to “Maintain” a specified Altitude or Flight Level.

Pilots who are unable to comply with a clearance issued; either due to deteriorating weather conditions or any other factor MUST inform ATC before deviating from the clearance issued.

Standard VFR Departure Routes and associated clearance altitudes.

The following table provides examples of the recommended text which may be used in the Route Field of your VFR Flight Plan for the standard departure routes from CI Airfields along with the expected clearance altitude.

Where no prominent ground features exists, notified IFR Reporting points have been substituted. (Please refer to the UK AIP for details)

Please Note: Where no standard route exists between Jersey and the pilot’s desired exit point the pilot should plan for the most appropriate standard route and once airborne request a more direct routing on first contact with Jersey Approach.

Pilots who are unable to comply with a given clearance; either due to deteriorating weather conditions or any other factor MUST inform ATC before deviating from the clearance issued.

When in force PPR is ONLY required for inbound flights to the Channel Islands.
A Flight Plan MUST be submitted at least 1 hour prior to departure.

CI CTR PPR

With the seasonal increases in commercial air traffic during the summer months there may be occasions that Prior Permission may be required in order to regulate VFR traffic entering the Channel Islands Control Zone during peak periods. CI CTR PPR is applied ONLY to inbound VFR or Special VFR air traffic and may be tailored for specific routes and airfields or applied globally.

Pilots must ensure that they check relevant NOTAMs and the UK AIP for any restrictions prior to submitting their Flight Plan.

VFR Formations of Aircraft within Channel Islands may be permitted in accordance with procedures detailed in the UK AIP.
